Here’s how it works. When you first set up Face ID, the TrueDepth camera system projects 30,000 invisible dots and reads the pattern on your face with an infrared camera. A13 Bionic then builds your unique depth map, converting those angles and curves into a mathematical representation. This becomes your master key, and it’s encrypted and protected in the Secure Enclave on your device. It doesn’t leave your iPhone or get backed up to iCloud or Apple servers.
Then, when you unlock your phone (or sign into an app or use Apple Pay) Face ID performs the same process, projecting the dots and comparing them with your stored data.
